2021's Hottest Colors

When I was a photography student, one of our assignments was to photograph as many images as we could using Pantone’s color of the year. I remember it was a yellow-green and I found many items from food to running shoes to nature. I learned that the Pantone Color Institute uses color psychology and fashion trend forecasts to name the color of the year. Pantone is considered the design world’s leading authority on color. They consult with businesses to advise on color for product and brand development and are the industry leader in predicting what colors will be what people are excited about.

This year 2021 has two colors that share winning honors. They are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, a bright yellow. They are two different colors that support each other.

It is rare that two colors are named color of the year, but this year calls for double honors.

The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.

What other colors are on the horizon? There are various shades for interior paint colors to fit any lifestyle ranging from not-so-subtle neutrals to bold statement colors. Good Housekeeping says to look for these trends in 2021.

What about fashion? We know the different seasons of the year dictate whole new palettes of color and in 2021 they are following an optimistic color trend. According to The Zoe Report, pale yellows, soft lavenders, turquoise, tangerine, and bright greens will be the hot colors of the season.

What colors speak to you? I am excited to look for these calming, yet vibrant hues. Some are all-time favorites, others are ones I’d love to try. What are you dreaming about? Can we take a cue from the Queen?
