Fair Isle Sweaters Make a Comeback
Fall’s hottest sweater is timeless
How many resurrections of the fair isle sweater have you experienced in your lifetime? It seems like every ten years, the fair isle makes a reappearance with a new twist. This year this beloved sweater is out with bold colors, chunky knits, and a variety of silhouettes.
Fair Isle is a term that means multicolored knitwear and originated on Fair Isle, a remote island 80 miles off Scottland between Shetland and Orkney. Each design contains an average of four colors, with only two colors used in each row. A small number of islanders still produce sweaters in patterns handed down from generation to generation. Fair Isle sweaters have long been famous with the royal family from as far back as the 1920s.
Journalist Chris Morfett visited Fair Isle in 1970 and was fascinated by the people and their tradition of knitting these beautiful sweaters that we still enjoyed today.
